Biography of Sandra Goodman
Artistic interest and talent were evident from a early age in Sandra Goodman, not only in the visual arts but also the performing art of music. Throughout her youth, Sandra’s interest and study of art was enriched by countless observations of work by the classical masters as well as contemporary artists. Her artistic interests resulted in works of several different medias throughout her life from fiber art, clothing design, pastels on bisque, jewelry making, acrylics, etc., to her current love of painting.
While studying for her degree at the University of Oregon, Sandra’s artistic focus centered on music where she was awarded the “Ruth Lorraine Close” scholarship every year for harp studies and performance. She earned her BA in music education, and then furthering her educational goals after graduation with work in a teaching fellowship position for the Master Degree Program in Music at Boise State University.
Through her major course of study at the U of O, other opportunities she discovered in the Arts Program allowed her to continue to study and define her visual artistic talents simultaneously. Her exposure and study of the many talented artists, both living and those no longer with us, helped her refine her path of artistic pursuit. After graduation from the University she taught harp, piano, voice, and music theory for over 20 years eventually owning her own Music Store and private lesson studios in Southern Oregon.
Sandra continued to actively explore and define her visual arts interest in a number of medias. She found the true love of her artistic life in painting oils on canvas. Sandra combines the many similarities found in the study of music and painting, from the discipline and time required to master your technique and style, to the elements of composition and harmony so evident in a beautiful song or an inspiring painting.
Sandra’s love of nature, that began in her early childhood during camping trips with her family in Northern California, lead to the studies of her first college degree in Environmental Horticulture. Beauty of the natural world around her consumes the major focus of her current work. Having been blessed with the opportunity to live on the Olympic Peninsula, she finds inspiration and subject matter for most of her work around every corner right here at home. While a professed life-long student she spends every day studying and refining her technique and style. Sandra’s goal is to share with the viewer her passion and love for the subject she is painting. Highly influenced by the French Impressionistic movement, Sandra’s stylistic goal is not to reproduce her subject in a photographic reality but rather to work in a painterly style. Her representation and impressions of nature are enhanced by each brush stroke and combination of values and hues, that bring harmony to her beautifully expressive compositions.
Her passion and desire for expressing her love of the arts is best summed up in her own words. “I love being in the outdoors and observing birds and other wildlife in their habitats, and studying the beauty of nature’s flora all around me. Living in this special place in the Pacific Northwest inspires me to spend all of my time sketching and painting landscapes, seascapes, wildlife, and occasionally florals to bring variety to my work. I feel privileged to share my impressions of nature and the world around me with you through my paintings. My goal is to convey the esthetic accurate representation of my subjects, and inject the emotions felt during these observances in each and every work completed.”
